About us

It all began with
a phone call

EChurch — Electronic Church — was born as a telephone church: one conference call a week for people who had come to faith but never set foot in a church. Today we are a local congregation in Ålands Österby outside Uppsala.

Our story

From telephone church
to congregation

EChurch began as a telephone church — that's where the name comes from: EChurch, Electronic Church. The church's founder, Stefan Edefors, came into contact through his work with people he led to faith. They had no church background, and so no natural connection to going to church.

Stefan therefore started a weekly conference call to teach and encourage those who had come to faith, along with anyone curious to hear what the Christian message is about.

Who we are

A church for everyone
who wants to follow Jesus

We are a church for everyone who longs to follow Jesus — whatever your age, situation or background. Generations meet here and form a spiritual family where every person matters and adds to the community.

In our congregation, diversity is a strength. People from different social backgrounds and walks of life find a place here to thrive, develop and grow in their faith. We believe the church is more than a meeting place — it's a home where we share life, support one another and together seek to live lives that honour Jesus.

So in Christ we, though many, form one body.

Our faith

What we believe

  • We believe that God is our creator, and also a heavenly Father to those who find him.
  • We believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the one who has opened a way to God. Whatever we've done, whoever we are, we can come close to God through what Jesus has done for us.
  • We believe you can come to know God personally by inviting Jesus to be Lord of your life.
  • We believe God has a plan for every person's life, and that you can begin living in that plan as you get to know God better.
  • We believe God is present, here and now, and that we can experience his presence and his power through his Spirit — who is everywhere, and who makes himself known to those who seek him.

Values

Four things we refuse
to compromise on

  • An open door

No one is expected to believe right, live right or dress right to belong here. Belonging first, change later.

  • The Bible taken seriously

We teach from the text, not from trends. God's word is the foundation for everything we believe, say and do.

  • Expecting miracles

We pray for the sick and expect God to answer. We don't give up — we persevere and pray for one another through hard times.

  • Wholehearted commitment

Christian faith isn't just a hobby or a private worldview but a living, committed life in service of God and neighbour.

Frequently asked

What people wonder
but rarely ask

Do I have to believe in God to come?

No. You're free to sit, listen, think, and agree with exactly as much as you want. Everyone is welcome just as they are.

Does it cost anything?

Offerings and gifts are voluntary. A short word on giving is shared during the services, encouraging generosity — but every gift is voluntary. Coffee is usually free; when a meal is served there may be a small at-cost charge.

What do you think of other churches and denominations?

We're glad to work with other congregations. We believe the Church is bigger than us and have no interest in competing over people.

Is there something for children?

Every Sunday we run kids' church with a programme made just for the children.

I've been hurt in a church before. What do you do differently?

We can't promise we'll never get things wrong, but we can promise we'll do everything we can to build a community that is warm, inclusive and reasonable.

Can I take part without becoming a member?

Yes — for as long as you like. Membership is a way of saying you want to be part of the spiritual family, be involved, and regard the church's leaders as your leaders and shepherds.
